Describe the changes you have noticed

Bring questions about mood, behavior, daily life, and substance use to a qualified clinician. Avoid assuming that one issue explains everything or that a particular treatment is right.

Ask how care is coordinated

  • Who assesses both mental health and substance use concerns?
  • What experience does the provider have with overlapping needs?
  • How are family members involved with the person's consent?
  • What support is available outside appointments?

Do not delay urgent support

For immediate danger or a medical emergency in the U.S., call 911. For emotional or suicide-related crisis support, call or text 988, including if you are worried about someone else.
